REWARDS (Reading Excellence: Word Attack and Rate Development Strategies) authored by Anita Archer, Vicky Vachon, and Mary Gleason, is a specialized reading program designed to teach intermediate students a flexible strategy for decoding “long words” (multisyllabic) and to increase their oral and silent reading fluency.  Teachers will learn techniques in helping develop students’ skills in decoding unknown multisyllabic words; accurately reading more multisyllabic words within sentences; read words found in science, social studies, health textbooks, and other classroom materials; read content area passages not only accurately but fluently; experience comprehension as their accuracy and fluency increases; and have more confidence in their reading ability.

The REWARDS Program is research validated and is proven to be an effective intervention when used with students reading at least at a 3.0 level but below grade level in Grades 4-6.  The 20 lesson Teacher’s Guide will need to be provided by the participating districts for each participant.  Student booklets are also needed when providing the five week intervention with students pending on the number of students needing this specific intervention.  The materials may be purchased from Sopris/Cambium Learning.

Substitute Reimbursement Available.

REWARDS Materials: Each participant needs a REWARDS Intermediate Teacher Manual (2nd Edition).  Student workbooks can be ordered after the training pending on how many students will be provided this intervention. http://www.voyagersopris.com/literacy/rewards/overview
